A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL, DONNA JAKUBIK

Winter has truly arrived, but luckily spring is just around the corner!!! With the academic year in full swing it is time to turn our attention to standardized testing.  The middle school administration and faculty are working diligently to prepare students to perform well on New Jersey standardized tests. To meet the mandates of the federal act, No Child Left Behind, all New Jersey sixth, seventh and eighth grade students will take the NJASK this spring.  NJASK is short for New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge. The dates of testing are as follows:

NJASK 8, formerly know as the GEPA, April 28, 2008 to May 1, 2008

NJASK 7, April 28, 2008 to May 1, 2008

NJASK 6, May 5, 2008 to May 8, 2008.

The New Jersey Department of Education describes the NJASK as a competency based assessment that tests whether a student “knows and understands” or “knows and is able to use” content area information. The NJASK is a criterion referenced test aligned to the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards.  Examples of the content areas assessed by the NJASK are as follows:

  • Language Arts Literacy (LAL): Reading- Students will read a narrative and demonstrate comprehension and analytical skills. Students will read a Persuasive article and will answer a series of open ended as well as multiple choice questions. Writing- Students will write speculative and persuasive essays
  • Mathematics: Students will answer multiple choice and open-ended questions regarding concepts such as: Number Sense, Concepts, and Applications, Spatial Sense and Geometry, Data Analysis, Probability, Statistics, Discrete Mathematics, Patterns, Functions, and Algebra.
  • Science: (NJASK 8 only) Students will answer multiple choice and open-ended questions about Life, Physical, and Earth Science.

**Parents, please be aware that the district subscribes to an internet based standardized test preparation program for all sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students. All students may access the site both at school and at home. You may access the site at home by typing www.studyisland.com( ask your child for his/her user name and password)  Research indicates that the more practice with test prep questions students have- the higher they score on state standardized tests.  Please encourage your child to actively use this site at home.**

Sincerely,

Donna Jakubik

Principal
